PSP in Nabakoutou
The co-operation with Nabakoutou, the head of the eponymous village near Sané, is our first project. Since the late Seventies, M Nabakoutou has been running his health post (PSP) and struggles to provide the population of his village with basic medication for the most urgent conditions. When we first visited the village in 1994, we were impressed by the high quality of his treatment. However, there was a constant need for essential drugs and consumables. Together with Nabakoutou we developed a concept to fund his PSP, while seeking its sustainability and guaranteeing its independence:
The required essential drugs are provided free of charge by LAAFI and are sold in the PSP at the current official price. The revenues - usually between 50-70% - feed a rolling fund, which can be re-invested into community projects at the village's discretion. So far, these funds have been used to rebuild the PSP in concrete and to dig an additional well. Currently, the community is saving for a water pump near the PSP.
