Mobile workshop for wheelchairs
Katrin Rohde, who initiated and runs an orphanage for street children in Ouagadougou, has also been caring for the disabled since her arrival in Burkina Faso.
Wounds are prevalent and usually heal badly, often leaving amputation as the only solution. Moreover, poliomyelitis is still a big problem. Once bound to the wheelchair and without proper possibilities to earn a living, repairs often pose a serious problem: 'With a 4x4 vehicle, we could reach the remotest villages, enabling us to offer repair services to wheelchair bound members of the community once or twice a year' says Katrin. In autumn 1999, we acquired such a vehicle in Austria from our own funds and soon found in Helge an enthusiastic organiser and executor of the tour to Africa. The mobile workshop for wheelchairs has thus become reality. Moreover, the theatre crew is also using the car for their programme. Finally, the vehicle serves us as a means of transport during our annual stays in Burkina Faso.
